About the cave

Boybuloq is the deepest karst cave in Central Asia. Its main entrance lies at 2,647 m on the plateau of the Surkhantau, a southern spur of the Hisor Range, and the nearest village is Dehibolo, north-east of Boysun. A small stream flowing from the entrance gave it its name, “rich spring”.

Soviet cavers began exploring it in 1985, and later expeditions were led by the Yekaterinburg caving club with colleagues from Italy, Britain, Slovakia, France, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Measurements put its depth at 1.4–1.5 km and its length at 15–18 km. The cave consists mostly of very narrow meanders and ends in an impassable sump.
