Cultural Space of Boysun
A mountain district where ancient customs are still alive
district · Surkhandarya Region
A mountain district in the region’s north-west with the Boysuntog range, Teshik-Tash cave, the Iron Gate, the Omonxona spring and the UNESCO-listed Cultural Space of Boysun.
Boysun District was created on 29 September 1926, merged with Sherobod in 1962 and re-established in 1965. It borders Sariosiyo to the north-east, Qumqo‘rg‘on to the east, Qiziriq and Bandixon to the south, Sherobod to the south-west and Kashkadarya Region to the north-west and west. At 3,206 km² it is one of the region’s largest districts, with 129,400 inhabitants on 1 January 2026; the centre is Boysun town, 145 km north-west of Termez.
Most of the district is taken up by the Boysuntog range and its gorges. Mountain villages such as Avlod, Darband, Machay and Sayrob are known for ancient plane trees, springs and a traditional way of life.
UNESCO proclaimed the Cultural Space of Boysun District a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001, and it was inscribed on the Representative List in 2008. The district contains the Teshik-Tash cave of Neanderthal fame, the Iron Gate gorge and Darband Wall, the Hellenistic Uzundara fortress and the Omonxona healing spring and sanatorium. In the 6th–13th centuries Bosand, one of the towns of Chaghaniyan, stood on the site of Boysun.
