The family necropolis of the sayyids of Termez, built over seven centuries
city · Surkhandarya Region
The capital of Surkhandarya Region and Uzbekistan’s southernmost city: a river port on the Amu Darya, the Friendship Bridge to Afghanistan, and Buddhist and Islamic monuments.
Termez lies on the right bank of the Amu Darya near the Afghan border, at about 310 m above sea level and 708 km from Tashkent. The city covers 40 km² and had 213,000 inhabitants on 1 January 2026. It is an international river port and railway station, and one of the hottest cities in Uzbekistan.
Ancient Termez has more than 2,500 years of history, and the city celebrated its 2,500th anniversary in 2002. The modern town grew from a Russian border fort and garrison built in 1893 by the village of Pattagissar; it regained the name Termez in 1928 and became a city in 1929. The Friendship Bridge to Hairatan in Afghanistan was built across the Amu Darya in 1982, and Termez State University was founded in 1992 on the basis of the pedagogical institute. The city received the Order of Amir Timur in 2014.
The Termez Archaeological Museum in the centre is renowned for its Bactrian and Kushan finds. On the eastern edge stand the Sultan Saodat ensemble, the Kokildor Ota khanqah and the Kyrk Kyz fortress; to the north-west lie the al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi complex, the ruins of Old Termez and the Buddhist monasteries.
