Bandixon District
Created in 1992, abolished in 2010 and re-established in 2019, the district contains the Bandixon fortified settlement of the 2nd–1st centuries BC.
Origins
Bandixon District was created by a decree of the Presidium of Uzbekistan’s Supreme Council on 18 May 1992. In 2010 parliament abolished it and merged its land into Qiziriq District, then on 30 November 2019 voted to restore it, redrawing the boundaries of the Qiziriq, Boysun and Qumqo‘rg‘on districts. Today it covers 684 km² and had 87,600 inhabitants on 1 January 2026; the centre is Bandixon.
The name comes from the Persian band-i khan, “khan’s dam”: in the past the Bandixon stream was blocked by a fired-brick dam that sent water onto the Bandixon–Qiziriq plains.
Historic sites
The district’s main monument is the Bandixon fortified settlement of the 2nd–1st centuries BC, identified in 1973 and excavated in 1975–1976. The ancient bed of the O‘rgulsoy divides the 1.5-hectare site in two. Nearby mounds such as Maydatepa, G‘ozimullo, Bektepa and Kindiktepa were also ancient settlements; at G‘ozimullo archaeologists found ceramic pipes that brought spring water from afar.
