district · Surkhandarya Region
A district in the middle of the Surkhan–Sherobod valley, with rolling hills crossed by the Surkhandarya, a rail junction and, in the mountains to the north, deep karst caves.
Qumqo‘rg‘on District was created on 24 March 1977 in the centre of the region. It borders Sariosiyo to the north, Jarqo‘rg‘on to the south and south-west, Oltinsoy, Sho‘rchi and Uzun to the east, Denov to the north-east, Bandixon and Boysun to the west and Tajikistan to the south-east. It covers 1,829 km² and had 267,200 inhabitants on 1 January 2026; the centre is Qumqo‘rg‘on town.
The district sits in the middle of the Surkhan–Sherobod valley, with the Surkhandarya flowing north to south through it. The land is mostly rolling hills rising gently westwards and eastwards towards the Bobotog. The mountains to the north hold Boybuloq, Central Asia’s deepest cave, and other karst caves.
Qumqo‘rg‘on is the eastern terminus of the Tashguzar–Boysun–Qumqo‘rg‘on railway, which linked Surkhandarya directly with the rest of the country instead of via Turkmenistan. Irrigated land supports cotton, grain, vegetables and orchards.
