Said Otaliq Madrasa
The only large Bukhara-style madrasa in the Surkhan oasis
district · Surkhandarya Region
A district in the upper Surkhandarya valley with over 440,000 people, the most in the region; home to Khalchayan, the Said Otaliq Madrasa and the legacy of Chaghaniyan.
Denov District was created in 1926 and borders the Sho‘rchi, Sariosiyo, Uzun and Oltinsoy districts. It covers 1,146 km² and had 440,500 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, the largest population of any district in the region. The centre is the town of Denov, and the district also includes the settlements of Do‘stlik and Xayrobod.
Most of the district is plain, framed by the Bobotog range to the east and the Boysuntog to the west. Winters are short and mild, with a January average of 2.9 °C against 28.4 °C in July; the plains receive 130–360 mm of rain a year and the foothills and mountains 445–625 mm.
In antiquity the Denov area was the heart of the land known as Chaghaniyan. The palace of Khalchayan, from the time of the Kushans and their ancestors and famous for its clay sculpture, was excavated here. In the centre of Denov stands the Said Otaliq Madrasa, the only large Bukhara-style madrasa in Surkhandarya, and the town also has the Denov arboretum (Eco Garden).
