History

The mausoleum bears the name of Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak al-Marwazi (736–797), a celebrated scholar, hadith transmitter and Sufi born in Merv. He studied in Baghdad, Basra, Mecca, Medina, Balkh, Bukhara, Samarkand and Nasaf and is counted among the pupils of Imam Abu Hanifa. He died in Hit on the Euphrates and was buried there. According to the sources, his venerated site in Kashkadarya came to Timur’s attention, and a mausoleum was raised over a symbolic grave in the village of Khoja Muborak. The building dates from the 14th century and has been under state protection since 2019.

Ibn al-Mubarak wrote on Sufism, law, hadith, history and Quranic exegesis; his Kitab al-Zuhd (Book of Asceticism) is regarded as one of the earliest works of Islamic ethical literature.
