About the site

Mugtepa is an archaeological site of the classical period — the shahristan, or inner town, of ancient Kasan. It lies in the village of Mugqala in Kosonsoy District and on 4 October 2019 was added by Cabinet of Ministers resolution to the national list of immovable cultural heritage, placing it under state protection; it is managed by the regional cultural heritage department. Kasan is listed among Fergana's ancient towns as early as the Arab conquest. Mugtepa is now part of the serial nomination 'Silk Roads: Fergana–Syrdarya Corridor'. The site lies about 2 km north of the Kosonsoy Friday Mosque, near the point where the Kosonsoy river leaves the mountains. The celebrated 15th–16th-century Naqshbandi sheikh Ahmad Kasani (Makhdumi Azam) also came from this land of Kasan.
