A madrasa devoted to two poets
Museum · Jizzakh
A memorial museum opened in 1992 in the Jizzakh home of Sharof Rashidov's parents, with five halls of personal belongings, books and gifts from foreign leaders.
Sharof Rashidov (1917–1983) was born in Jizzakh. Known as a writer, he served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan from 1959 to 1983, leading the republic for almost a quarter of a century. His era, which brought industrialisation, the reclamation of the Hungry Steppe, the rebuilding of Tashkent after the 1966 earthquake and, later, the events of the 'cotton affair', is still judged in very different ways by historians.
Rashidov wrote the novels The Victors, Stronger than the Storm and The Mighty Wave and the poem Kashmir Song. His name also lives on in a district of Jizzakh Region: the former Jizzakh District was renamed Sharof Rashidov District in 2016.
The museum opened on 6 November 1992 for the 75th anniversary of Rashidov's birth. It occupies the homestead of his parents, Rashid Ota and Qulsinoy Ona Khalilova, which once stood on the edge of town. In 1979 the old house was refurbished at the wish of his widow, Khursanoy Gofurovna, and after a decree of 27 March 2017 marking his centenary the museum was renovated.
There are five halls: a main hall, an exhibition on Rashidov's life and writing, a room of documents and gifts from foreign leaders, a hall devoted to Khursanoy Gofurovna and the family, and Rashidov's study, moved here from his Tashkent flat with its desk, books and personal effects.
