Hospitality and the dastarkhan
‘A guest ranks above your father’: the seat of honour, a dastarkhan that is never left bare, and table manners from breaking the bread to the closing blessing.

Tales of the quick-witted, justice-loving folk hero Khoja Nasreddin; the tradition of telling them has been shared UNESCO heritage of seven countries since 2022.
Afandi is a figure of Turkic oral lore: Nasriddin Afandi to Uzbeks, Nasreddin Hodja to Turks, Kozha Nasyr to Kazakhs, Molla Nasreddin to Azerbaijanis. In the anecdotes he is brave, truthful, a champion of justice and of the poor, mocking unjust officials, judges and anyone whose deeds fail to match their words — sometimes with gentle humour, sometimes with biting satire.
The stories turn on surprise, absurdity and repartee: the narrator always escapes a tight spot by the power of words. Many have become proverbs and sayings, used to liven up a conversation, clinch an argument or explain a situation.
In 2022 the ‘Telling tradition of Nasreddin anecdotes’ was inscribed by UNESCO as a joint nomination of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan has produced books, films (Nasreddin in Bukhara among them), an operetta and musical comedies about Afandi. In Bukhara, by Lyab-i Hauz, a statue of Nasreddin astride his donkey is one of the city’s favourite photo spots.
