Events
An international kupkari tournament held in spring in Syrdarya district, Syrdarya Region: hundreds of riders and thousands of spectators.
Kupkari (ulak) is Central Asia’s oldest horseback game, in which riders fight to seize the carcass and carry it into the ‘kazan’ scoring zone. Most games are organised by villages for family celebrations, but large international tournaments with teams and referees from across Central Asia are also held. One of them is the International Kupkari Festival planned for May 2026 in Syrdarya district of Syrdarya Region; the exact date was not announced in advance.
Spectators must stay off the field — the best spot is higher ground at a safe distance. Bring a hat and sun protection, and check the date with local tour operators or regional news.
