Events
A ‘festival of festivals’ founded in 1958 as a showcase for Asian and African cinema and revived in 2021; held in the second half of the year.
The Tashkent film festival was founded in 1958 as the International Festival of Asian and African Countries, became a festival of Asian, African and Latin American cinema in 1976, and ran under that name until 1988. After independence it was held only twice, in 1992 and 1997.
In 2021 a presidential resolution revived it as an annual ‘festival of festivals’ named ‘Pearl of the Silk Road’: the 13th edition ran from 28 September to 3 October 2021, the 14th on 14–19 September 2022 (400 filmmakers from 40 countries) and the jubilee 15th in 2023. Festival days bring screenings of international films, masterclasses and meetings with world cinema stars to Tashkent.
