History

The park was created in 1932 on the site of an old brickworks' clay pits, built by hashar — communal volunteer labour. In Soviet times it was the Lenin Komsomol Central Park of Culture and Rest; today it bears the name of Alisher Navoi. A children's railway ran here until September 2017, and the park was reconstructed in 2020.

What to see

The park covers 65 hectares, 9 of them taken up by a lake and canals, with beaches on the eastern shore, rides and cafés. On a hill at the centre, a statue of the 15th-century poet Alisher Navoi stands under an openwork domed rotunda, and since 2017 a Writers' Alley has gathered monuments to figures of Uzbek literature. The grounds also hold the Oliy Majlis (parliament), the Navruz wedding palace, the Istiqlol concert hall, an art gallery, the main festival stage and the 19th-century Abulkasim Madrasah, with Magic City next door.
