History

Sheikh Shamsuddin Kulol died in 1370. Timur had his grave faced with black marble, raised a domed mausoleum over it and, in 1373–1374, had the remains of his father, Amir Taraghai, reburied at the sheikh’s feet. Excavations showed that the tomb sits on the walls of an older mosque of the 10th–12th centuries.

Under Ulugh Beg the mausoleum was renewed and the Kok Gumbaz Mosque was built opposite. Plain on the outside, it is nonetheless the spiritual heart of the ensemble and remains a place of pilgrimage.
