Dorut Tilovat Ensemble

A 14th–15th-century memorial complex: the tomb of Shamsuddin Kulol, Ulugh Beg’s Kok Gumbaz Mosque and the Gumbazi Sayyidon mausoleum. Timur’s father, Amir Taraghai, is buried here.

The “House of Recitation”

Dorut Tilovat is a memorial complex in the south-west of the historic centre. Its Arabic name means “the house where the Quran is recited”. The site began as a cemetery of sayyids, descendants of the Prophet, and grew into one of the key burial grounds of the Timurid house.

At its heart lies the 14th-century Sufi sheikh Shamsuddin Kulol. Tradition says he was a humble potter, hence the epithet Kulol. He was revered as the spiritual guide of Timur’s father, Amir Taraghai, and of the young Timur himself; Sharaf ad-Din Ali Yazdi’s Zafarnama records that Timur held the sheikh in deep respect and often visited his grave.

How the ensemble grew

After the sheikh died in 1370, Timur ordered a domed mausoleum over his grave, and in 1373–1374 the remains of Amir Taraghai were moved here. Excavations showed that the tomb stands on the foundations of an older mosque of the 10th–12th centuries.

The complex flourished again under Ulugh Beg. According to the portal inscription, in 1435–1436 he built a Friday mosque opposite the mausoleum in the name of his father Shah Rukh. Its huge dome was sheathed in blue tiles, so people called it Kok Gumbaz, the Blue Dome, and it served as the main congregational mosque of Shahrisabz. In 1437–1438 Ulugh Beg added another tomb beside Shamsuddin Kulol’s for members of the dynasty; later the sayyids of Termez were buried in it, giving it the name Gumbazi Sayyidon, the Dome of the Sayyids.

Excavations in 1994–1996 uncovered the remains of a madrasa, a gatehouse and a minaret on either side of the mosque, after which the mosque portal, part of the madrasa and the mausoleums were restored.

An inscription inside Gumbazi Sayyidon records that it was built by order of “Sultan Ulugh Beg Gurgan, exalted in justice and learning” in AH 841, that is, 1437–1438. Over the 14th and 15th centuries a single ensemble of tomb, madrasa, mosque and dynastic mausoleum thus took shape around an enclosed courtyard.

What to see

The blue dome of Kok Gumbaz catches the eye first, with Quranic verses in large letters around its drum. Across the courtyard stands the plain-looking tomb of Shamsuddin Kulol, and south of it the compact, high-drummed Gumbazi Sayyidon, whose painted interior and marble tombstones are the most refined part of the ensemble.

Dorut Tilovat is still a working shrine: it is busy on Fridays and religious holidays, and prayers are held in the mosque.

Did you know?

Some sources say Timur’s son Umar Shaikh was also buried somewhere within Dorut Tilovat, but scholars disagree on the exact location of his grave.
