History

Four gates face the four points of the compass, and the southern one is the Tosh Gate. Built in the later 18th century, it was first called the Angarik Gate because the road to the village of Angarik began here. When Allakuli Khan walled Dishan Kala in 1842, the outer wall acquired its own Angarik Gate, and the inner one became the Tosh (stone) Gate. In the early 20th century a bazaar in front of it earned it the name “Old Bazaar Gate”. It is a multi-roomed building running north to south and was locked at night as part of the town’s defences; it came under state protection in 2019.
