History

The Independence Monument was first planned for the Blue Domes alley in central Tashkent, but after residents protested and signed a petition against demolition a new site was chosen. The first saplings went in on 1 May 2021, more than 2,000 workers and 200 machines were involved, and the park and monument opened on 31 August 2021, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of independence; parks of the same name soon followed in other regions. Because of the tight deadline and pandemic restrictions, some planned images of historical figures and events on the monument were to be added later.

In the park

At 104 hectares it is one of the largest public parks in Uzbekistan, planted with more than 10,000 trees and shrubs of 235 species — chestnuts, oaks, maples and more — and beds of tulips. The Independence Monument stele stands at its centre, and since 2022 visiting dignitaries have traditionally laid flowers there.
