About the biennial

The Bukhara Biennial, a project of Uzbekistan’s Art and Culture Development Foundation, is the country’s first major international art biennial. The inaugural edition, ‘Recipes for Broken Hearts’, curated by Diana Campbell, ran from 5 September to 23 November 2025 and drew 1.8 million visitors. Every work was site-specific, made by international and regional artists together with Uzbekistan’s master artisans.

The biennial animates a new Cultural District of restored landmarks such as the Magoki Attori Mosque and centuries-old caravanserais. The second edition, in 2027, is curated by Kulapat Yantrasast and runs from 3 September to 21 November.
