Savitsky Museum (State Museum of Arts of Karakalpakstan)
Forbidden art saved in the middle of the desert
Museum · Nukus
Karakalpakstan’s museum of history, local lore and culture, founded in 1929: archaeology, Karakalpak jewellery, costume and musical instruments, natural history and the Aral Sea tragedy.
Founded in 1929, in the early years of Karakalpak autonomy, this is the republic’s oldest museum, long known as the regional museum. It stands in central Nukus, not far from the Savitsky Museum.
Displays cover archaeological finds from the fortresses and towns of ancient Khorezm, traditional Karakalpak jewellery, clothing and musical instruments, the vanished and endangered plants and animals of the lower Amu Darya and the Aral region, and a section on the shrinking of the Aral Sea and its consequences. Together with the Savitsky it makes a good introduction to Karakalpakstan.
