Qo‘shko‘pir District
A district in western Khorezm on the Turkmen border, named after two bridges built side by side, where the Imorat Bobo architectural complex survives.
Setting and history
The district borders Shovot to the north, Urganch to the northeast and east, Khiva District to the south and Turkmenistan to the west, covering about 540 km². Formed in the 1930s, it was merged into Khiva District in the early 1960s and re-established a few years later; in khanate times the area was known as Gazovot.
The name means “twin bridges”, after two bridges that stood side by side, local speech turning Qoshakopir into Qoshkopir. It is flat land with a sharply continental climate, drained by trunk collectors. The 188,600 residents (2026) grow cotton, grain and fruit and keep silkworms and bees, and the Imorat Bobo complex of the 14th–18th centuries is the district’s main monument.
