Khiva District

A rural district surrounding the city of Khiva and running to the Turkmen border. In its village of Gandimiyon the 1873 treaty that sealed the Khiva Khanate’s fate was signed.

Setting and history

The district borders Qo‘shko‘pir to the north and northwest, Urganch and Xonqa to the northeast, Yangiariq to the east and Turkmenistan to the south and southwest. It lies on the plain of the lower Amu Darya’s left bank at around 97 metres and is one of the driest districts in the country. Formed in 1926, it is centred on the village of Shomokhulum and had 161,200 inhabitants at the start of 2026.

For centuries these villages fed the capital. Gandimiyon has a special place in history: the Treaty of Gandimiyon, signed here in 1873, made the Khiva Khanate a dependency of the Russian Empire. The Dishan Kala gate named after the village was rebuilt in 1970.
