Setting and history

First created in 1950, Yangibozor District was abolished in 1959, its land divided between Gurlan and Urganch, and restored in the 1980s. It borders Gurlan to the northwest, Urganch to the southeast, Shovot to the southwest and west, and Karakalpakstan across the Amu Darya to the north and east, covering about 340 km². In khanate times the area was called Qiyot-Qongirot; today’s name means “new bazaar”. The population was 95,400 in 2026.

Nature

A section of the Xorazm National Nature Park lies on the riverbank, where a 3.5-hectare patch of tugai woodland has been fenced as a breeding centre for Bukhara deer, goitered gazelle and other rare animals. The district also has the Yangibozor state natural monument.
