Hazrati Imam (Khast Imam) Complex
The spiritual heart of old Tashkent
Itineraries · City break
Old-city mausoleums and Chorsu Bazaar, metro stations, museums and the Tashkent Modernism added to UNESCO's list in 2026 — a two-day plan for the capital.
Best time to go
2 days
The old city: the Hazrati Imam complex (the Muyi Muborak library with the Uthman Quran, and the Kaffal Shashi Mausoleum), Chorsu Bazaar and Kukeldash Madrasa.
In the afternoon, a metro tour: Kosmonavtlar, Alisher Navoi and other decorated stations; in the evening, opera or ballet at the Alisher Navoi Bolshoi Theatre.
Amir Timur Square and Museum, the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan and the Museum of Applied Arts.
Tashkent Modernism: the State Circus and the Zhemchug apartment block (from outside), Minor Mosque, and the Tashkent TV Tower at sunset.
Tashkent is often treated as a transit stop, but it easily fills two days: the first for the old city and bazaar, the second for museums and 20th-century architecture.
On 26 July 2026 ten buildings of Tashkent Modernism — among them Chorsu Bazaar, Kosmonavtlar metro station, the State Circus, the Zhemchug apartment block and the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan — were inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The metro and Yandex Go are the easiest ways around; the old city is walkable.
With extra time, add a day trip to the Sun Heliocomplex in Parkent district, Tashkent Region (also part of the UNESCO listing), or to the Chimgan mountains.
Tashkent eats plov at lunchtime — the famous plov centres usually sell out by mid-afternoon.
Avoid visiting the Hazrati Imam mosque during Friday midday prayers. Museum closing days vary, so check ahead.
