Travel tips
Getting from Tashkent to the regions
Samarkand and Bukhara by Afrosiyob, Khiva and Nukus by plane or night train, the Fergana Valley via the Kamchik Pass — a quick cheat sheet for the main routes.
Samarkand, Bukhara, Navoi, Jizzakh, Syrdarya
The train is the obvious choice. The Afrosiyob reaches Samarkand in about two hours and Bukhara in about four; both regular and high-speed services stop at Jizzakh, Gulistan and Navoi.
By road, Samarkand is about 300 km from Tashkent. There are flights to Bukhara, but the train is often more convenient, since stations are closer to the centre.
Khorezm and Karakalpakstan
The fastest option is a flight from Tashkent to Urgench or Nukus (roughly 1.5–2 hours). Khiva is about 35 km from Urgench airport.
The cheaper option is the night train: a long ride, but a sleeper berth saves a hotel night. By road from Bukhara to Khiva across the Kyzylkum is around 450 km — a full day's drive.
The Fergana Valley
Trains to the Andijan, Namangan and Fergana regions run through the tunnel under the Kamchik Pass; the journey takes several hours depending on the destination. Shared taxis cross the pass too — quicker, but the hairpins can be hard on the stomach.
There are also flights from Tashkent to Fergana, Namangan and Andijan.
The south: Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya
The Afrosiyob runs to Karshi. Shahrisabz is usually reached by road from Samarkand over the Takhtakaracha Pass — about 90 km.
Flights from Tashkent to Termez take about 1.5 hours; there is also an overnight train.
Tashkent Region
Chimgan, the Charvak Reservoir and Amirsoy lie roughly 80 km from Tashkent — 1.5–2 hours by taxi or hire car. Roads get busy at weekends, so set off early.
