Yangiobod District
Created in 1999, the region's youngest and least populous district: hills and mountains bordered by Tajikistan on three sides, with old shrines.
Overview
Yangiobod District was formed on 30 April 1999, making it the youngest in the region. Its centre is the small town of Yangiobod. It borders Zomin District to the west and Tajikistan to the south, east and north. With 30,500 people, more than three-quarters of them in villages, it is the least populated district in the region.
The north is flat and the south rises into hills and mountains. The climate is sharply continental, with about 360 mm of rain a year. Grey-brown soils cover the plains, pebbly sandstone hills rise in the south-east, and in spring the hillsides are bright with tulips and poppies.
The district has several revered shrines, including Khojamushkent Bobo, Rustam Bobo, Sayidon Aziz and Changaul.
