Arnasoy District
A flat district in the north of the region, on the western edge of the Hungry Steppe and bordering the Aydar-Arnasay lakes, with cotton, livestock and fishing.
Overview
Arnasoy District was created on 26 November 1975. Its centre is the small town of Goliblar, and it has two small towns and 11 mahallas. It lies on the western edge of the Hungry Steppe by the Arnasay depression, with Aydarkul in its north. The land is flat, the soils are grey and saline, and the fields are watered by canals.
The district grew up on land reclaimed in Soviet times, where cotton was joined by livestock, vegetables and fish farming. Its population, 16,000 in 1980, now exceeds 50,000, two-thirds of them in villages.
Lakeside fisheries, shores ideal for birdwatching and wide steppe horizons give it tourism potential that is still largely untapped.
