Guliston District
The district around the regional capital: the eastern edge of the Hungry Steppe, Lake Achchiqkol on the Syr Darya and villages founded by canal builders in the 19th century.
Setting and nature
Guliston District was created on 16 April 1952. It lies on the eastern part of the Hungry Steppe plain at about 250 m, on loess loams and sandy soils, crossed by the branches of the Dustlik canal and by drains that carry off saline water. Lake Achchiqkol, formed by spring floods, lies on the left bank of the Syr Darya, where jackals, jungle cats, badgers, ducks and pheasants live.
History
In 1886 labourers who came to dig a canal across the steppe founded eight Russian settlements here, among them Romanovsky (Krestyansky), Obetovanny and Upper and Lower Volynsky; some of the names survive in today’s villages. An Alisher Navoi Palace of Culture was built in 1986. Cotton and grain are the backbone of the economy, and the district centre is Dehqonobod.
