city · Sirdaryo Region
The capital of Sirdaryo Region, which grew up beside a railway station in the late 19th century as the settlement of Golodnaya Step and became Gulistan in 1961.
In the 19th century this was Achchiqquduq, a hamlet of 40 households. After the Samarkand–Tashkent railway and a canal bringing water to the steppe were completed in 1895, Russian settlements sprang up around the station, which from 1905 was called Golodnaya Step and from 1922 Mirzachul. It became an urban settlement in 1952, the town of Gulistan (“land of flowers”) in 1961 and the regional capital on 26 November 1963. A 10th–12th-century Oghuz chieftain’s burial was found on the Ulkan Soylik mound within the city.
Gulistan lies about 120 km south-west of Tashkent on the Dustlik canal. It has the Sirdaryo Regional Museum of History and Culture, the Alim Khojaev music and drama theatre, the St Nicholas Church of 1945, the Friday mosque founded in 1905, a central square and a city park. Gulistan State University is the region’s main university.
