Toyloq District
A garden district 10 km east of Samarkand: Zarafshan and Dargom riverbanks and over 260,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables a year; in 2026 it is expanding to absorb most of Samarkand District.
Setting and nature
Toyloq (Taylak) District lies east and southeast of Samarkand in the most fertile stretch of the Zarafshan valley. Official statistics give it 277 km² and 231,000 people, more than 830 per square kilometre and the highest density of any district in the region. Urgut District wraps around it to the south and east, while across the Zarafshan to the north lie Jomboy and Bulungur. The land is a plain of river floodplain and old terraces, blanketed by 5–10 m of loess.
The district takes in 31 km of the Zarafshan and 21 km of the Dargom canal, as well as the Qorasuv stream. Patches of tugai woodland of oleaster, willow, reed and Turanga poplar survive along the river, and the Zarafshan National Nature Park lies on the opposite, right bank. The climate is continental, with July averaging about 26 °C, January around 0 °C and 400–480 mm of rain a year.
History
According to the regional administration, the name comes from the Toyloq, an Uzbek clan. In 1939 eleven village councils of Samarkand District were split off as Komsomol District, and its centre, the village of Toyloq-Payon, was renamed Komsomolsk; in 1959 the area was merged back into Samarkand District. Today's Toyloq District was created on 9 April 1992, and its centre has been an urban-type settlement since 1980.
A new chapter opened in 2026. In August the Senate voted to abolish Samarkand District: 28,295 ha of its territory pass to Toyloq, while 1,265.6 ha of Toyloq go to the city of Samarkand. The district will roughly double in size; updated official figures have not yet been published. Not far from Toyloq, on the left bank of the Dargom, stands Kafir-kala, a Sogdian castle of the 5th–8th centuries. Since 2001 an Uzbek-Japanese expedition has uncovered a charred wooden door carved with the goddess Nana, clay seal impressions and coins there, and since 2023 the site has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.
Economy
All 50 mahallas live from farming fruit, vegetables, grapes, potatoes and melons, harvesting more than 260,000 tonnes a year. Two large and three medium-sized plants process around 126,000 tonnes, and a Toyloq branch of the Urgut free economic zone operates at Khojaqishloq. Local products include canned fruit, juices, wine, bread and confectionery. The M-39 highway and the A-377 road to Panjakent cross the district, and an eco-tourism area is planned on the Dargom.
Getting there
Toyloq is 10–15 km from central Samarkand, a 15–20 minute drive along the A-377 towards Panjakent. Buses and shared minibuses run regularly from the city. The Zarafshan banks and the teahouses along the Dargom are best enjoyed on a cool summer evening.
