Location and history

The name comes from the Sirgeli (Sirgali), a Kazakh tribal union. Sergeli District was formed on 20 January 1967 out of the mass housing built on empty land for those left homeless by the 1966 earthquake; in the 1980s–1990s four- and nine-storey blocks replaced one- and two-storey wooden houses.

It borders the Yakkasaray, Mirabad, Chilanzar, Bektemir and Yangihayot districts and the Zangiota district of the region, from which it gained 1,827.1 ha in 2021. Its population was 177,700 on 1 October 2025.

What it is known for

On 26 December 2020 the five-station Sergeli branch of the Chilonzor metro line opened. The ancient mounds of Kugaittepa and Khonobodtepa survive within the district.
