Location and history

Bektemir lies in the south and south-east of Tashkent, mostly outside the ring road, on the left bank of the Chirchiq River, and takes its name from the Bektemir canal. From 1960 to 1973 it was an urban-type settlement of the Tashkent Region, then the town of Bektemir, renamed after Nariman Narimanov in 1981; on 27 February 1990 it joined Tashkent as a city district.

The 2021 boundary changes added land from the Yuqorichirchiq (490 ha) and Ortachirchiq (1,134.2 ha) districts of the region. With 70,400 residents on 1 October 2025 it is the least populous district, though it grew fastest over the year, by 9.3%.

What it is known for

The district has some of the city's big markets — the Quyliq farmers' and building-materials bazaars and the Food City market — and an embankment along the Chirchiq at Quyliq.
