Location and history

Yunusabad runs north from Amir Timur Square to the Tashkent ring road and includes Independence Square with its government buildings. It was formed on 26 August 1936 as Kirov District and renamed on 8 May 1992. Badly hit by the 1966 earthquake, it became the site of the Yunusobod housing estate from 1968, where 700,000 square metres of homes went up in two years.

With 391,100 residents on 1 October 2025 it is the second most populous district after Almazar; locals navigate by the 'Universam' stop and Yunusobod Bazaar.

What to see

Much of the city centre lies here: Amir Timur Square and the Amir Timur Museum, Independence Square, the State Museum of History, the Romanov Palace and the Courage Monument. Further north are the TV tower, the Shahidlar Khotirasi memorial, Minor Mosque, the Japanese Garden, the Botanical Garden and the zoo, with Alay Bazaar closer to the centre.
