district · Tashkent
A north-western district named after a historic quarter of the Old City: home to Chorsu Bazaar, the Kukeldash Madrasah, the Sheikhantaur Complex and Tashkent City.
Formed on 29 November 1929 as October District, it was renamed on 8 May 1992 after Sheikh Khovendi at-Tahur, a renowned scholar of Transoxiana — the name of one of the four quarters of old Tashkent. It borders the Almazar, Yunusabad, Chilanzar, Yakkasaray and Uchtepa districts and had 372,700 residents on 1 October 2025.
The district spans the Old City and the modern centre: the UNESCO-listed Chorsu Bazaar, the Kukeldash Madrasah and Khoja Ahrar Vali Mosque, the Sheikhantaur Complex and Yunus Khan's mausoleum, and the shrine of Sheikh Zaynuddin. The 'flying saucer' circus stands on Hadra Square, the 'Panorama' Palace of Cinema on Navoi Avenue, with the Ilkhom Theatre and the Tashkent City business district and park nearby.
