Mingbulak Natural Monument
The last remnants of the Akkum sands
district · Namangan Region
The region's only district on the left bank of the Syr Darya: Central Fergana sands, lakes, oilfields and the Mingbulak natural monument.
Mingbuloq District was formed on 29 September 1952 as Zadaryo District and took its present name in 1994. It lies on the left bank of the Syr Darya, on the virgin and fallow lands of Central Fergana, bordering Chust and Turakurgan districts to the north, Namangan District to the north-east, Pop to the north-west, Ulugnor District of Andijan Region to the south-east and Fergana Region to the south. Its centre is Jomashuy.
The land is low-lying, with sand dunes and salt flats, a dry climate and 150–200 mm of rain a year. There are lakes such as Kokandkul, Qolgandaryo, Tungizkul and Tegirmonkul, and a mineral spring near the village of Gurtepa.
Oil is extracted in Mingbuloq District. To protect the desert landscape, the Mingbulak natural monument was set up in 1991, safeguarding remnants of the Akkum sands and desert wildlife in two sections. Foxes, jackals and hares live among the saxaul, tamarisk and reed beds.
