Fergana's ancient capital
district · Namangan Region
West of Namangan: the ruins of Akhsikath, Fergana's ancient capital, the memorial complex of the enlightener Ishoqxon Ibrat, and the Shahand sanatorium.
Turakurgan District was formed on 17 February 1936, merged with Namangan District in 1962 and re-created on 7 December 1970. It borders Namangan District and part of Namangan city to the east, Mingbuloq to the south, Chust to the west and Kosonsoy to the north. It covers 330 km², and its centre is the town of Turakurgan. The Syr Darya flows along the south, the Kosonsoy in the north and the Sumsarsoy in the west.
Near the village of Shahand, on the right bank of the Syr Darya, lie the ruins of Akhsikath: founded in the 3rd century BC, it was the capital of Fergana in the 9th–10th centuries.
Turakurgan was the birthplace, in 1862, of Ishoqxon Tora Ibrat — enlightener, poet, historian and one of the first Uzbek publishers; his memorial complex, with a museum, garden, avenue and printing house, opened here on 3 May 2018. The district also has architectural monuments such as the Goyibnazar Qozi Madrasa (1892) and the Falosbonbuva (1860) and Langarbibi mausoleums, as well as the Shahand sanatorium.
