Yangi Namangan District
A district within Namangan created in 2021, grouping the city's northern neighbourhoods: 60 km² and more than 157,000 residents.
History
The idea of a Yangi Namangan district was put forward in February 2021; after debate in the regional council and the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the Senate approved its creation on 24 April 2021. Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 293 of 8 May 2021 set up the district administration, housed in a former college building in the Oromgoh mahalla.
Under the original plan the district received more than 8,000 hectares and 24 mahallas, including Akhsikent, Mashrab, Furqat, Beruniy, Mingchinor and Oromgoh. Separate statistics have been kept since 1 January 2023, when the district covered 60 km² with 28 mahallas and 157,600 people.
Today
Yangi Namangan is a young city district made up mostly of housing estates, schools and public facilities; as part of the city it has no separate administrative centre. Its mahalla names — Akhsikent, Mashrab, Furqat — recall the region's ancient city and its famous poets, and the historic monuments of central Namangan are within easy reach.
