Kosonsoy Friday Mosque
A historic mosque in white and blue
district · Namangan Region
A foothill district in the north of the region: the ruins of the ancient town of Kasan, the Kosonsoy Reservoir and the birthplace of the Sufi master Makhdumi Azam.
Kosonsoy District was created in 1926, merged with Chust District in 1962 and re-formed on 28 December 1973. It lies in the north of the region at the foot of the Karatau hills, at an average altitude of about 790 metres, bordering Namangan city to the south, Yangiqurgan District to the east, Chust to the south-west and Kyrgyzstan to the north and west. Its centre is the town of Kosonsoy.
The district takes its name from the 154-km Kosonsoy river, which rises in the Chatkal Range. The town of Kasan is listed among Fergana's ancient towns as early as the Arab conquest; its ruins, the Mugtepa mound, are state-protected. The 15th–16th-century Naqshbandi sheikh Ahmad Kasani, known as Makhdumi Azam, was also born here.
The Kosonsoy (Urtatokay) Reservoir has been built on the river, and the district also has the Qorasuv and Yertikan reservoirs. The Kosonsoy Friday mosque is the district's historic place of worship. The hilly terrain favours orchards and livestock, and the mountain air offers relief from the summer heat.
