Setting and history

Mirishkor District lies in the south-west of Kashkadarya Region, bordering Muborak to the north, Kasbi, Qarshi and Nishon to the east, the Olot and Qorako‘l districts of Bukhara Region to the west and Turkmenistan’s Lebap Province to the south. It was created on 6 January 2003 by merging the Usmon Yusupov and Bahoriston districts.

At 3,100 km² it is the region’s second-largest district, with 124,100 inhabitants in 2022. The centre is Yangi Mirishkor and the largest settlement Jeynov. Most residents are Uzbeks, alongside Arabs, Turkmen, Tajiks and others.

Nature and economy

The district lies within the flat Qarshi steppe. Karakul sheep are raised on the steppe pastures, while land reclaimed with water from the Qarshi main canal grows cotton and grain. There are also gas fields.
