Yakkabog District
A district at the foot of the Hisor Range’s south-western spurs, with the Yakkabogdaryo (Qizildaryo) valley, the No‘g‘ayli reservoir and Khoja Ilgar, Timur’s birthplace.
Setting and nature
Yakkabog District was created on 29 September 1926. It borders Chiroqchi and Shahrisabz to the north and Qamashi on its other sides. It covers 1,300 km² and had 320,000 inhabitants in December 2023; the centre is the town of Yakkabog, and the district also includes Eski Yakkabog and 63 mahallas.
In the east rise south-western spurs of the Hisor Range up to 2,500 m, the Chaqchar, Beshnov and Xontaxta mountains, which descend westwards into the Kashkadarya plains. The main river is the Yakkabogdaryo (Qizildaryo), rising in the Hisor mountains, and the district also has the No‘g‘ayli reservoir.
Historical significance
Timur was born in 1336 in the village of Khoja Ilgar near Kesh, which today lies in Yakkabog District and has a mosque named after Khoja Ilgar Ota. Several holiday camps operate in the foothills, and orchards and vineyards are widespread.
