Nishon District
A steppe district in the south of the region with the Tallimarjon reservoir and power station, the Qarshi main canal and the Turkmen border.
Setting and nature
Nishon District was created on 6 March 1975. It borders Turkmenistan to the south, Qarshi District to the north, G‘uzor to the east and Kasbi to the west. It covers 2,100 km² and had 159,200 inhabitants in 2022. It has two towns, Tallimarjon and Yangi Nishon, and the settlement of Nuriston; the centre is Yangi Nishon.
The district lies in the south of the Kashkadarya oasis on the Qarshi steppe, mostly desert plains, low ridges and foothills. The climate is sharply continental: July averages 28.8 °C, highs reach 45 °C and rainfall is 180–220 mm a year.
Economy
The Qarshi main canal, carrying Amu Darya water to the Qarshi steppe, crosses the district, which also holds the Tallimarjon reservoir. The town of Tallimarjon is home to the Tallimarjon thermal power station, one of the country’s major energy plants. Cotton and grain grow on the reclaimed land and livestock graze the steppe.
