Yerqo‘rg‘on (Erkurgan)
Ancient Nakhshab, first capital of the Qarshi oasis
district · Kashkadarya Region
A district north-west of Qarshi, one of the first created in 1926, home to over 317,000 people. Part of Yerqo‘rg‘on, capital of ancient Nakhshab, lies within it.
Koson District lies in the north-west of Kashkadarya Region, bordering Nurobod District of Samarkand Region, the Ko‘kdala, Muborak, Qarshi and Kasbi districts and Qarshi city. One of the country’s first districts, it was created on 29 September 1926. It covers 1,880 km² and had 317,400 permanent residents on 1 October 2024; the centre is the town of Koson, and the district also includes Po‘lati and Guvalak.
This land on the lower Kashkadarya has been an irrigated oasis since antiquity. The ruins of Yerqo‘rg‘on, ancient Nakhshab’s capital, beside the Qarshi–Bukhara road, straddle the boundary between Koson and Qarshi districts.
The economy rests on farming, cotton, grain and livestock, and on processing, including an oil-extraction plant in Koson. Its closeness to Qarshi keeps it tightly bound to the regional capital.
