Chimboy District
A district on the right bank of the lower Amu Darya, centred on Chimboy, one of Karakalpakstan’s old towns, with the Khan Mosque and the mausoleum of the folk bard Akymbet.
Setting and history
Chimboy District was created on 3 July 1927. It lies on the right-bank plain of the lower Amu Darya along the Kegeyli canal at 60–70 metres, with marshy tugai woods in the west and north and dunes reaching the Kushkhanatau hills in the northwest. It borders Moynaq to the northwest, Bozatau to the west, Kegeyli to the south and Qoraozak to the east and northeast.
Its centre, Chimboy, is one of Karakalpakstan’s old trading and craft towns. The district had 117,100 residents in 2026, and the town has the Khan Mosque, the mausoleum of the folk bakhshi Akymbet, the Ibrayim Yusupov park and a monument to the first tractor in Karakalpakstan.
