Jampyk Kala
A medieval river port on the Amu Darya
district · Republic of Karakalpakstan
A broad district in east-central Karakalpakstan: the Beltau and Toshkuduk sands, the spurs of the Sultanuizdag in the south and the ruins of Jampyk Kala.
Created in 1928, merged into Taxtakopir in 1959 and restored on 26 November 1975, Qoraozak District borders Moynaq to the north, Chimboy, Kegeyli and Nukus to the west, Amudaryo and Beruniy to the south and southeast, and Taxtakopir to the east, covering 5,900 km². It is mostly flat, with the Beltau sands in the northeast, the Toshkuduk sands across much of the south and the first spurs of the Sultanuizdag on its southern edge. The population was 54,800 in 2026.
On the right bank of the Amu Darya, on the southwestern spurs of the Sultanuizdag, lie the ruins of Jampyk Kala, an ancient town that became a river port in the 12th–14th centuries, with another Gyaur Kala nearby. The district also has the Nukumtubek reserve.
