Setting and history

Beruniy District was formed on 3 July 1927 (merged into Turtkul District in 1962–1964). It lies on the right bank of the Amu Darya with the Kyzylkum to the north, bordering Ellikqala to the northeast, Amudaryo to the west, Qoraozak and Taxtakopir to the northwest and Xorazm Region to the south. It covers 3,940 km² and had 212,600 residents in 2026.

Its centre, the town of Beruniy, stands on the site of ancient Kath, capital of Khorezm under the Afrighid dynasty in the 4th–10th centuries. The polymath Abu Rayhan al-Biruni was born here in 973, and the town bears his name.

What to see

The Sultan Uvays Bobo shrine at the foot of the Sultanuizdag range is one of Karakalpakstan’s busiest pilgrimage sites. The Amu Darya floodplain holds the tugai woods of the Lower Amu Darya Biosphere Reserve (formerly Badai-Tugai), and ancient Akchakhan Kala lies near Toprak Kala.
