Qanlikol District

A small district in central Karakalpakstan on the left bank of the Amu Darya, notable for the traces of ancient river channels and a book museum in its centre.

Setting and history

Qanlikol District was formed on 7 December 1970 from parts of Qo‘ng‘irot and Shumanay. It borders Qo‘ng‘irot to the northwest, Kegeyli to the east, Nukus District to the southeast and Shumanay to the south, covering about 740 km², and is centred on the settlement of Qanlikol.

It lies on the fertile plain of the lower Amu Darya’s left bank, where dry ancient channels — the Uldarya, Kindikozak and Begjap — and the beds of old lakes survive, with patches of shifting sand. Its 54,800 residents (2026) grow cotton and rice and raise livestock, and the district centre has a book museum and a monument to the book.
