Setting and history

Ellikqala District was created on 23 March 1977. It borders Kazakhstan’s Kyzylorda Region to the north, Beruniy and Taxtakopir to the west, Turtkul to the south, Navoiy Region to the east and Xorazm Region to the southwest, covering 5,400 km² of plain that slopes down to the north and meets the Kyzylkum in the northeast. Its largest lakes are Akchakol and Dumanqala, and its fields draw water from the Bogyop canal. The population was 176,900 in 2026.

What to see

This is the heartland of Khorezm’s desert castles: the palace city of Toprak Kala, the three forts of Ayaz Kala, Kyzyl Kala, Guldursun, Kyrk Kyz and more, all within the Desert Castles of Ancient Khorezm on UNESCO’s Tentative List. Bo‘ston has a museum of archaeology and history, and a yurt camp operates near Ayaz Kala.
