Nurafshon

Known as Toytepa until 2017, when it became the capital of Tashkent Region; in ancient times the place was called Mingtepa and Nukat.

History

An ancient settlement on the site was known as Mingtepa and Nukat, first recorded in its heyday in the 10th–12th centuries. The modern town gained its status in 1973 as Toytepa and long belonged to Ortachirchiq District. In August 2017 the Senate renamed it Nurafshon, “radiant”, and made it the administrative centre of Tashkent Region, whose offices had until then in practice been based in Tashkent.

Today

Nurafshon lies on the Tashkent–Kokand highway south-east of the capital, close to the Tashkent–Angren railway, with the Tuyabuguz Reservoir, the “Tashkent Sea”, to the south-west. Since becoming the capital it has gained an amphitheatre, water slides and a “Nurafshon” stele at the town entrance, and the population has grown from 17,000 in 1975 to almost 59,000.
