Setting

Ortachirchiq District was created on 29 September 1926 and lies in the centre of the region between the Chirchiq River, the Tashkent canal and the Akhangaran. It borders Tashkent city and Zangiota District to the north and Ohangaron, Quyichirchiq, Oqqoʻrgʻon and Piskent districts on its other sides. The plain on the left bank of the Chirchiq is crossed by the Tashkent and Qorasuv canals, and the Tuyabuguz Reservoir, the “Tashkent Sea”, spreads across the south.

History

In the 20th century the district was known for large farms run by Korean settlers. From 1940 the Polar Star collective farm was led for more than 34 years by Kim Pen Hwa, twice Hero of Socialist Labour; it took his name in 1974, and his bronze bust stands near the village of Chivintepa. The town of Toytepa, part of the district until 2017, is now the regional capital Nurafshon.
